How Much Money Will I Need For My Round The World Travels?
By Haydn Wrath

How much money you will need on your round the world trip varies depending on the duration and style of your trip, which countries you are going to and what your priorities are, but here are some styles of travelling :

Pot-Noodle Backpacker :

Will always travel by the cheapest form of bone shaking public transport.

Will always stay in dormitories where they are available, or in the most basic hotels where not.

Will stay in each place for longer (the longer you stay in each place, the cheaper your trip becomes as you cut down on travelling costs and the longer you spend in each place, the more local eating and accommodation bargains you will unearth.

Some people think that camping is a good way to save money. Having a tent in places like South Africa, Australia or New Zealand will certainly save you money and as well as in campsites, you can often camp in hostel gardens for a small fee. In places like Asia, this isn't really an option and there is an abundance of cheap accommodation to be found.

Champagne Backpacker (or Flashpacker) :

Won't spend a fortune staying in 5 star hotels and will still stay in hostels but go for single or twin rooms in the nicer ones and when in places like Asia, Africa or Latin America will find the temptation to spend what is only a small amount back home on upgrading to stay in local small hotels that are that are really nice to stay in.

Same again for food - the Champagne backpacker will not think about the cost of food and get stuck into the local cuisine.

Will travel to more places and will avoid uncomfortable means of transport.

Tailor-made Traveller :

Usually people with less time (and more to spend of course). Will tend to pre-book accommodation in nice hotels and pay attention to the kind of rooms they stay in - e.g. go for the Harbour View or Sea View option. Will also stay in upmarket boutique properties. Tailor made trips take the headache and hassle out of arranging stuff when you are away and allow you to just sit back and enjoy...

With all trips, a useful budgeting tip is to pre-book some things before you go as this reduces expenditure when you are travelling. Even a Pot-Noodle backpacker will thank themselves for having things like bus passes paid for and the occasional hotel booked and paid for when they arrive at a destination.
